In the mid 50’s a rope team of Italian mountain climbers in the Himalayas made the first ascent of the indomitable K2. The 8,611 m high K2 (also called Chogori or Mount Godwin Austen), on the border between Pakistan and China, is the highest mountain in Karakorum. It is part of
the Baltoro Mustagh massif. It is the second highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest and is one of only 14 mountains over 8,000 metres high.
After several failed attempts, K2 was first climbed on 31st July 1954 by Achille Compagnoni, Lino Lacedelli and Ardito Desio, who were part of a big Italian expedition. Fascinated by this achievement, Carlo Vanoni, an Italian inventor, decided to use the name for his newly developed formulations, beginning each with K2, from K2a through to K2z. In this way the recipe for a stain paste was given the number K2r. The K2r brand was created from this recipe number. With the emergence of aerosol spray cans, the first stain remover spray was developed which sprays stain-removing active ingredients and dirt-absorbing powder under pressure into the fabric. The first spray can was commercially produced in 1960. The initial success was phenomenal. Today the stain remover spray is sold worldwide in over 40 countries and the K2r range has increased to a multitude of stain-removing and household products.
